The Village

Finca las Adelfas is located in the hills directly north of the city of Málaga, just 8 kilometres (5 miles), as the crow flies, from the city’s cathedral. The entrance to the property is on the MA-3101 country road in the village of Los Gamez. There is an private unmade drive of 600 metres from the road to the house.

The village grew along this ancient road, which goes from Málaga to Casabermeja and originally all the way to Madrid. Nowadays there are about 300 inhabitants, and it is a very quiet place except at weekends. The area is famous in Málaga for its many “ventas” the traditional Spanish roadside bar/restaurants. At weekends thousands of Malagueños come here for long family lunches.

On the hill looking down on Las Adelfas and the coast is the chapel of Verdiales,- tiny, but for its cultural significance,- often marked on maps. This is the historical centre of the tradition of verdiales (festival of spring) folk music and dance, believed to pre-date flamenco.

Going downhill towards Málaga from Las Adelfas, the country road joins the A45 motorway about 3.5 km. from the estate entrance. The A45 is the main highway north from Málaga to Madrid and to the great Andalucian cities of Granada, Cordoba and Seville. This makes the finca an excellent base from which to tour inland Andalucia : most of the historical centres are reachable as a day trip.

Approximate driving times from Las Adelfas are : Granada 80 minutes (Sierra Nevada ski stations are a further 25 minutes), Cordoba 90 minutes and Seville 2 hours.

Heading south, after just 1 kilometre, the A45 joins the main coast highway, the Autovia del Mediterraneo which runs past Málaga airport to the west and on to Marbella (45 minutes) and Gibraltar (90 minutes). To the east is the small but very international beach resort of Nerja (45 minutes).
